A deformable mirror can be used to correct wavefront errors in an astronomical telescope. | | technology | optical systems | Horace W. Babcock | computer | active optics | tilts | telescopes | atmosphere | seeing | The Shack-Hartmann sensor is one type of wavefront sensor used for adaptive optics. The pupil plane aperture is subdivided using a lenslet array into a number of sub-apertures. The lenslets focus light into an array of spots on the CCD, and the displacements of these spots from known reference positions indicate the local slopes of the wavefront. These local slopes, in turn, are used to reconstruct the overall shape of the wavefront (in wavefront sensing) or may be used directly to compute the instructions for the deformable mirror or phase modulator. | | Shack-Hartmann sensor | light | star | astronomical object | Earth's atmosphere | turbulence | astronomical seeing | VLT | Keck | angular resolution | arcsecond | resolution | arcsecond | Negative images of a star through a telescope. The left-hand panel shows the slow-motion movie of a star when the adaptive optics system is switched off. The right-hand panel shows the slow motion movie of the same star when the adaptive optics system is switched on. The image of the star is much more compact, and breaks up less with adaptive optics switched on. However, the image of the star also changes shape much more quickly when the adaptive optics system is switched on. | | wavefront sensor | pixels | lenslets | Shack-Hartmann | Solar System | guide star | guide star | luminosity | magnitude | guide star | laser beam | Laser guide star | sodium | nm | mesosphere | thermosphere | speckle imaging | aperture synthesis | lucky imaging | space telescopes | NASA | Hubble Space Telescope | wavefront sensor | Shack-Hartmann | optical coherence tomography | Swedish Solar Telescope | laser | satellites | orbit | Boeing | Airborne Laser | free space optical communication | retina | optical coherence tomography | active optics | Fourier optics | photo diodes | Analog-to-digital converters | microcontroller | PID controller | digital-to-analog converters | stepper motors | mirror mounts | Analog-to-digital converter | Operational amplifiers | Active optics | Nonlinear optics: Optical Phase Conjugation | Wavefront | Wavefront sensor | Deformable mirror | Holography: Real-time holography | Image stabilization | Angular diameter | Angular size | ADONIS | Categories | Atmospheric and ocean optics | Telescopes | Astronomical imaging |
